from 20 reviewsThis story is really fun! The illustration is wonderful! Such a feel good story and unlike some this is not heavy. It’s perfect for all ages!Just met the author at a farmers market and I’m so glad I stopped. Looking forward to all of his books!
Big, bold colours with gigantic illustrations to boot. Full of expressions and action, all ages will enjoy the classically drawn cinematic story. A problem-solution tale, but Gertie goes about the solution in a fun way, with patience and happiness. A few vocabulary words may be a challenge for kids on the first read, but if they ask or with adult help, they'll likely remember on the second read-through. Nice bedtime story or even one to motivate the start of the day.
'Gertie Braves the River (Inspirational Books for Kids)' shows the reader Gertie the Giraffe in all her gusto. Gertie faces her day head on, and even when crossing a river becomes an obstacle, she finds her own way to persevere. This fun book has hand-drawn illustrations (so amazing to see) and a quick rhyming narrative to coincide. Gertie will instill in children the fact that they have to believe in themselves, have perseverance, and never give up on goals. Kudos to the author/illustrator on this fine book!
Love the illustrations and the message for kids. We need more books like this.
This heartfelt, rhyming picture book delivers a powerful message about resilience, courage, self-belief, hope, and determination. Written in lively rhymes and beautifully illustrated, the story follows a young, determined giraffe who learns that setbacks and failures are not the end of the journey, but essential steps toward success. The book captures children’s attention while naturally supporting speech rhythm, memory, and articulation development. Its rhythmic flow makes it a joy to read aloud, whether at home, in classrooms, or during therapy sessions. This book serves as an emotional toolkit for children and adults alike, reminding readers that progress often comes one small step or paddle at a time.
Our little grandkids love the cuteness of Gertie, the giraffe strolling around her native land, the Savana. The storyline needs a little continuation to understand the message, but the illustration keeps the grandkids laughing and imitating the poses Gertie made.
Reading with your children is also an ideal time to bond, while instilling wonder and good values. Gertie, the shy giraffe, teaches children that though they may face obstacles in life, with persistence, grit, and some creativity, no obstacle is insurmountable. Love the story, the characters, and the illustrations. Can’t wait for Gertie’s next book!
Gertie is an irresistibly sweet giraffe, and both kids and grown-ups will find themselves cheering her on as she faces the challenge of crossing a wide, rushing river. She tries and tries, and gets frustrated. Then, a wise friend reminds her to pause, breathe, and think things through. That moment of calm leads her to a wonderfully creative solution that shows little readers the power of perseverance and problem-solving.The illustrations are delightful and imaginative (the scene where Gertie uses her long neck as a mast for a sail was our family's favorite), and each page will have you rooting for her success. "Gertie Braves the River" is charming story with a good message for young children and their grown-ups alike!
This is an inspirational story about finding our inner strength. I love how Gertie actually listened to her friend’s advice, a rare and refreshing reminder that we don’t have to figure everything out on our own. It reminded me that when we’re faced with something difficult, sometimes we just need to pause, think, and then have the courage to trust ourselves with our actions. A powerful message in a sweet story.
Gertie Braves the River is a fun book with cute illustrations about Gertie's determination to succeed.
As an ex-elementary school principal, I spent many hours in classrooms watching teachers read to and with their students. A good book for early readers and pre-readers is one that not only tells an inspiring story (portraying a world where good happens) but also provides readers with an opportunity to relate to and discuss issues that are important in life.Gertie Braves the River is a wonderful example of a story that ticks all these boxes. The story is inspiring—a giraffe overcomes an obstacle in her life, relying on her own wit and determination. She practices patience and even a bit of meditation to solve her problem. She calms her mind and comes up with a solution. She takes advice from others who are wiser. The story is also told in rhyming verse—another plus, because all children love the sound of language. The illustrations of Gertie in her world, the other animals—the fish and monkeys—are colorful, imaginative and, in short, beautifully done. Looking at the illustrations help readers make sense of the story.I also like this book because the story itself is a good opportunity to have a reader identify an obstacle in their life and discuss ways of overcoming it.I heartily recommend this book to early readers. 5 stars.
I love this children's book! I'm always looking for children's books with good messages, and this one delivers. Also, I really appreciate all of the hand-drawn illustrations. They are super cute, and the kids love them. I read the first book in the series and am looking forward to any more that are to come!

Yes! Rhymes do matter for kids! A well-crafted rhyming manuscript in the correct verse and meter, encourages children to recognize patterns in words and sounds. Furthermore, it encourages them to be creative in their own speech. In addition, it highly improves memory and retention, because rhyming words are easier to remember. It's playful, musical quality keeps children engaged and ultimately inspires love for language because rhyming makes reading more engaging and very fun!

But there is a much deeper reason for this book. A very personal one!...
Years ago, he was thrusted into fatherhood by becoming a dad to an incredible stepson. This changed his life in a profound way that he couldn't ever imagine. Every night, before bed, he would sit together with the little boy and dive into the world of picture book bedtime stories: "I watched my stepson's eyes light up with wonder, and then softly close as he would fall asleep, finishing the night with a gentle kiss goodnight on his forehead. Our bond grew stronger with every bedtime story night, and over time a little child became less of a stepson and more of just.... my SON! These precious moments became our special time to connect, laugh and dream together. Reading to him not only built our relationship but gave me the privilege to witness the power of picture- storytelling firsthand, and the way it can create entertaining fun and comfort. To inspire and build a lifelong bond!"
